The Sports of Bethel University

About

I'm a Junior English ed major and journalism minor at Bethel University in St. Paul with a passion for telling sports stories that have the power to inspire and mentoring the next generation of critical thinkers. I love all the heartbreak that comes with Minnesota sports, the strangest of movies, and fresh walleye around the campfire. I'm seeking an opportunity to continue to tell the sports stories that matter and use my experience to inspire the next generation of storytellers.

‘Good chaos’

ARDEN HILLS — As the Bethel University Royals softball team entered the MIAC Playoffs armed with a 21-game win streak, senior second baseman Izzy Wilhelm sat in the opposing dugout inside Ona Orth Athletic Complex predicting the weekend to be “absolute chaos.”

That’s what some may describe the Royals softball team’s culture and energy in the other dugout. The Royals headed into the MIAC Playoffs with a 29–1 record since the team suffered back-to-back losses on Feb. 25 inside the Maverick All-Sp

THE BODY GOD GAVE ME

As a freshman, Liu was competing at section meets for Centennial High School and was extremely nervous before competing.

“I was really stressed about my time, and then I just surrendered it to God and was like, alright God, if you want me in this sport, it will be through your will,” Liu said.

Liu ended up running sections in the 200 and made the finals, hitting a personal record by a half second before coming in fifth in his section, and was one of the fastest runners in the state that year.

Throwing and breaking down doors

Bethel NCAA track and field thrower and BUILD student Dylan Delaske competes in the sport he loves and leads the way for others to compete.

The Bethel University Men’s Track and Field team hosted their first-ever outdoor meet April 15, and one of the athletes competing was Dylan Delaske, a BUILD student and NCAA discus and shot put thrower.

Delaske knew he wanted to throw in college. He told Director of BUILD Dawn Allen about his dream.

Delaske is a second-year student in the BUILD program at

Breaking Barriers in Brazil

Tiago poked his head around a parked car down the street facing the currently departing Bethel women’s soccer bus and nodded with a thumbs up towards Junior goaltender Izzy Smith. Izzy nodded back at him and gave him a sideways thumbs up, which is something the kids in Brazil do. The biggest smile ever crossed Tiago’s face. “I remember feeling like I had to get to know all of them or I wouldn’t leave a mark on their lives,” Smith said. Smith simply played soccer with Tiago. She passed the ball b

AUDIENCE OF ONE

These words are painted on the step of the Royal dugout at Ona Orth Athletic Complex and head coach Penny Foore thinks that it serves as a reminder to her team of who they are all really playing for.

“Obviously we’re playing to win, we want to be really good,” Foore said. “But at the end of the day, we want to remember who we’re playing for, why we’re doing it, and who gave us these gifts.”

This motto was put into place before Foore started coaching at Bethel, and this year's group of seniors

Bethel Cross Country has a new leader

After former Bethel cross country Head Coach Joe Stephens stepped down last May, Kevin Rengo, an assistant coach for track and field, has been hired and has taken over the position.

When college kid Kevin Rengo realized that he no longer needed to take upper-level calculus classes, or as he calls it “real math,” he began his pursuit of a full-time coaching career. Initially going to school at UW-River Falls to become a math teacher, Rengo was surrounded by people who were coaching full-time bec

Bethel hockey stuns team USA

The Bethel men’s hockey team defeated the USA U-18 National Development team by a score of 4-2 Oct. 15.

Oct. 15 became a special night at the National Sports Center Super Rink when the Royals started their season and exhibition campaign with a gritty 4-2 win against a young and highly talented USA U-18 National Development team.

The USA U-18 development team seeks to identify elite ice hockey players under the age of 18 and to centralize their training. The young men on this squad spend their

An update on Bethel’s new track

A brand new state-of-the-art track at Bethel means legitimacy and recognition for a talented and passionate Bethel track and field program.

After a time-consuming, collaborative and extensive effort from many different faces at Bethel, the brand new track is complete inside Royal Stadium.

“I’m in year 11 at Bethel and I’ve been having conversations about this track for 11 years,” head track and field coach Andrew Rock said.

It took intense coordination, generosity from donors and several hour
